Dear Lord Mayor, dear col\u00adle\u00adagues from the City Coun\u00adcil and Magis\u00adtra\u00adte, dear Dr. Gut\u00admark, dear Ms. Wille\u00adcke, ladies and gentlemen,<\/p>\n

An idea is begin\u00adning to beco\u00adme rea\u00adli\u00adty. Today we are taking the first step. Today we lay the foun\u00adda\u00adti\u00adon stone for a memo\u00adri\u00adal that reminds us of the dar\u00adkest chap\u00adter of the Ger\u00adman past. A memo\u00adri\u00adal that makes us awa\u00adre that under the rule of the Natio\u00adnal Socialists\u2013in our city as well\u2012people of Jewish faith were depor\u00adted to con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon camps and even\u00adtual\u00adly murdered.<\/p>\n

The memo\u00adri\u00adal on the Michels\u00adberg is inten\u00added to rai\u00adse awa\u00adre\u00adness that the Sho\u00adah is also a part of our own city\u2019s histo\u00adry, and did not just hap\u00adpen some\u00adwhe\u00adre in fara\u00adway Ber\u00adlin or Nurem\u00adberg. As in many other Ger\u00adman cities, Wiesbaden\u2019s syn\u00adago\u00adgues bur\u00adned. In our city, too, peo\u00adp\u00adle of the Jewish faith were not pro\u00adtec\u00adted from the rava\u00adges of the Natio\u00adnal Socia\u00adlist demon.<\/p>\n

The memo\u00adri\u00adal is inten\u00added to remind us of this. The names of all Wies\u00adba\u00adden citi\u00adzens of whom we know that they fell vic\u00adtim to the Sho\u00adah will be inde\u00adli\u00adbly lis\u00adted here. An illu\u00admi\u00adna\u00adted inscrip\u00adti\u00adon band at eye level lists the names of the vic\u00adtims. They are thus brought out of anony\u00admi\u00adty into the light and given their iden\u00adti\u00adty in the public space.
\nIn this way, remem\u00adbrance beco\u00admes per\u00adso\u00adnal, and the memo\u00adri\u00adal sets an unmist\u00adaka\u00adble sign in our city.<\/p>\n

Ever\u00adyo\u00adne should know and feel: Tho\u00adse who are named here \u2013they were our fel\u00adlow citi\u00adzens. We in Wies\u00adba\u00adden also want to and must deal with the events of that time. I think this is very important, becau\u00adse a city\u2019s socie\u00adty needs to deal honest\u00adly with its own past in order to main\u00adtain its self-respect.<\/p>\n

The wound that was inflic\u00adted on the city\u00adscape back then with the des\u00adtruc\u00adtion of the syn\u00adago\u00adgue will not be clo\u00adsed today. For we are not rebuil\u00adding the syn\u00adago\u00adgue; its out\u00adline is mere\u00adly hin\u00adted at on the flo\u00ador of the memo\u00adri\u00adal and on the road\u00adway. But it is also not the essen\u00adti\u00adal goal of the con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion to copy the old or even to heal what can\u00adnot be hea\u00adled. What is being crea\u00adted here is ulti\u00adm\u00adate\u00adly respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty tur\u00adned to stone.<\/p>\n

A respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty that has been impo\u00adsed on us by our city\u2019s histo\u00adry. A respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty that obli\u00adga\u00adtes us in the future: Never again may hou\u00adses of wor\u00adship burn in Wies\u00adba\u00adden, no mat\u00adter what deno\u00admi\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon. Never again should the\u00adre be room in our city for hat\u00adred and vio\u00adlence against our fel\u00adlow citi\u00adzens. Never again must peo\u00adp\u00adle who live here with us beco\u00adme vic\u00adtims of ter\u00adror, per\u00adse\u00adcu\u00adti\u00adon and extermination.<\/p>\n

We all\u2012every citi\u00adzen, every poli\u00adti\u00adci\u00adan, ever\u00adyo\u00adne who has his or her home here, bears a share of respon\u00adsi\u00adbi\u00adli\u00adty for this. Ever\u00adyo\u00adne in his or her place must do his or her part to ensu\u00adre that a cli\u00adma\u00adte of inner peace and mutu\u00adal tole\u00adrance pre\u00advails in Wies\u00adba\u00adden. No one can ste\u00adal away from this. Like all lar\u00adge pro\u00adjects, our memo\u00adri\u00adal has had a long lead time. Many peo\u00adp\u00adle work\u00aded on it, from the first visi\u00adons, ide\u00adas and con\u00adcepts to the incre\u00adasing\u00adly con\u00adcre\u00adte plan\u00adning and con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion, the begin\u00adning of which we are offi\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly cele\u00adbra\u00adting with today\u2019s lay\u00ading of the foun\u00adda\u00adti\u00adon stone. Under the pro\u00adfes\u00adsio\u00adnal direc\u00adtion of SEG, count\u00adless working-group mee\u00adtings took place. The archi\u00adtect, Ms. Wille\u00adcke, and her team did an excel\u00adlent job of desig\u00adning the buil\u00adding. Many employees of the city admi\u00adnis\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon, espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly the city archi\u00adves and the city plan\u00adning office, have work\u00aded with gre\u00adat com\u00admit\u00adment. The memo\u00adri\u00adal would be unthinkable wit\u00adhout the extre\u00adme\u00adly valuable con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adti\u00adons of the Jewish Com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty and the Acti\u00adve Muse\u00adum Spie\u00adgel\u00adgas\u00adse. They have play\u00aded a decisi\u00adve role in the state\u00adment, objec\u00adti\u00adve and mea\u00adning of the memo\u00adri\u00adal. I would like to express my sin\u00adce\u00adre thanks to all tho\u00adse who have con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adted and will con\u00adti\u00adnue to do so.<\/p>\n

I would like to men\u00adti\u00adon one name in par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar. For Ange\u00adli\u00adka Thiels, my pre\u00adde\u00adces\u00adsor in the office of head of the city coun\u00adcil, the memo\u00adri\u00adal was an affair of the heart. She dro\u00adve this pro\u00adject for\u00adward with all her strength, with gre\u00adat pas\u00adsi\u00adon and with her own irre\u00adpres\u00adsi\u00adble ener\u00adgy. Unfort\u00adu\u00adna\u00adte\u00adly, she will not be able to expe\u00adri\u00adence today\u2019s lay\u00ading of the foun\u00adda\u00adti\u00adon stone. Ange\u00adli\u00adka Thiels always empha\u00adsi\u00adzed how glad she was that the pro\u00adject was being rea\u00adli\u00adzed with gre\u00adat bipar\u00adti\u00adsan con\u00adsen\u00adsus and was not the sub\u00adject of pet\u00adty par\u00adty squab\u00adbles. She belie\u00adved that this con\u00adsen\u00adsus was due to respect for the vic\u00adtims. The fact that such a con\u00adsen\u00adsus has emer\u00adged per\u00adma\u00adnent\u00adly in our city par\u00adlia\u00adment is due to the per\u00adsua\u00adsi\u00adve\u00adness and per\u00adso\u00adnal inte\u00adgri\u00adty of Ange\u00adli\u00adka Thiels. This buil\u00adding will be inse\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adb\u00adly lin\u00adked with her name.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
