My memo\u00adry of the ori\u00adg\u00adins of the Michels\u00adberg Memo\u00adri\u00adal of Names goes back to the mid-1980s. From the very begin\u00adning, the pro\u00adject of com\u00adme\u00admo\u00adra\u00adting the Sho\u00adah was influen\u00adced by an his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adcal par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adla\u00adri\u00adty in the rela\u00adti\u00adons bet\u00adween the city and its Jewish citi\u00adzens. It was inspi\u00adred by the mutu\u00adal desi\u00adre to pro\u00admo\u00adte and streng\u00adthen the fri\u00adend\u00adship bet\u00adween the sta\u00adte capi\u00adtal Wies\u00adba\u00adden and its Jewish com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty. In line with the results, and some\u00adwhat proud of what has been achie\u00adved, I the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre look back on a long pro\u00adcess of reflec\u00adtion, dis\u00adcus\u00adsion and argu\u00admen\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon, which for me began on Novem\u00adber 9, 1984: It was a cold after\u00adnoon and a not par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar\u00adly digni\u00adfied memo\u00adri\u00adal hour at the Michels\u00adberg. A few weeks ear\u00adlier, Dr. Jentsch had brought a spe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly pre\u00adpared memo\u00adri\u00adal book to Yad Vas\u00adhem in Jerusalem.<\/p>\n

Sub\u00adse\u00adquent\u00adly, the pro\u00adject was pushed forward\u2014sometimes more, some\u00adti\u00admes less\u2014and always with the invol\u00advement and par\u00adti\u00adci\u00adpa\u00adti\u00adon of the Jewish com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty. At the sug\u00adges\u00adti\u00adon of then city coun\u00adcil\u00ador J\u00f6rg Bour\u00adgett, we\u2014my wife Danie\u00adla and I\u2014some time later twice pho\u00adto\u00adgra\u00adphed the lar\u00adge book in Yad Vas\u00adhem con\u00adtai\u00adning the pre\u00advious\u00adly known names of the Wies\u00adba\u00adden Jews mur\u00adde\u00adred during the Sho\u00adah and brought the copies with us.<\/p>\n

The idea of the Michels\u00adberg as a place of remem\u00adbrance remain\u00aded. Lord Mayor Achim Exner, for exam\u00adp\u00adle, even con\u00adside\u00adred rebuil\u00adding the syn\u00adago\u00adgue at the site during his time in office. The Jewish com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty was cri\u00adti\u00adcal of the plan, poin\u00adting out that while a des\u00adtroy\u00aded buil\u00adding could be repla\u00adced by a new magni\u00adfi\u00adcent one, the Jewish peo\u00adp\u00adle who were mur\u00adde\u00adred at that time could not. In 2000\/2001, the topic \u201cName-Com\u00ad\u00adme\u00ad\u00admo\u00adra\u00ad\u00adti\u00adon on the Michels\u00adberg\u201d was taken up again in con\u00adnec\u00adtion with the immi\u00adnent demo\u00adli\u00adti\u00adon of the high bridge the\u00adre. Rita Thies, then head of the Depart\u00adment of Cul\u00adtu\u00adre, invi\u00adted the Jewish com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty to a dis\u00adcus\u00adsion. The then chair\u00adwo\u00adman of the Acti\u00adve Muse\u00adum Spie\u00adgel\u00adgas\u00adse Doro\u00adthee Lot\u00adt\u00ad\u00admann-Kae\u00ad\u00adse\u00ad\u00adler was also present.<\/p>\n

She\u2014as well as Diet\u00adrich Schwarz, then mana\u00adging direc\u00adtor of the Urban Deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment Com\u00adpa\u00adny (SEG)\u2014 ear\u00adned las\u00adting merit as an ener\u00adge\u00adtic mana\u00adger of the sen\u00adsi\u00adti\u00adve project,.<\/p>\n

During all this time, I had the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to get to know and app\u00adre\u00adcia\u00adte peo\u00adp\u00adle from the muni\u00adci\u00adpal coun\u00adcil, the city coun\u00adcil, the poli\u00adti\u00adcal par\u00adties, the administration\u2014especially the city archives\u2014as well as many other com\u00admit\u00adted citi\u00adzens. I am gra\u00adteful for this, all the more so becau\u00adse the pro\u00adject to crea\u00adte a memo\u00adri\u00adal on the Michels\u00adberg was hand\u00adled for the most part with care.<\/p>\n

Spi\u00adri\u00adtual\u00adly and archi\u00adtec\u00adtu\u00adral\u00adly, the memo\u00adri\u00adal was suc\u00adcessful\u00adly crea\u00adted. The com\u00adme\u00admo\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon of names at the Michels\u00adberg thus makes what was lost reco\u00adgnizable again.<\/p>\n

The names of the mur\u00adde\u00adred Jews remain the visi\u00adble and thus supe\u00adri\u00ador his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adcal evi\u00addence com\u00adpared to the rhe\u00adto\u00adri\u00adcal con\u00adfes\u00adsi\u00adons in the past and present.<\/p>\n

With full jus\u00adti\u00adfi\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon, we, the mem\u00adbers of our Jewish com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty, see it as our duty to be pre\u00adser\u00advers of the tra\u00addi\u00adtio\u00adnal iden\u00adti\u00adty of Ger\u00adman Jewry and at the same time citi\u00adzens of our city and of this state.<\/p>\n
