In the not too distant future, the\u00adre will be no more eye\u00adwit\u00adnesses who can tell us from per\u00adso\u00adnal memo\u00adry about the years befo\u00adre 1945\u2014about the Sho\u00adah, the hor\u00adrors of the Natio\u00adnal Socia\u00adlists. That is why we need places of remembrance\u2014as remin\u00adders for pre\u00adsent and future gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons, as memo\u00adri\u00adals for the vic\u00adtims of the Tyran\u00adny. It is a mat\u00adter of making visi\u00adble that in Wies\u00adba\u00adden too\u2014as ever\u00ady\u00adwhe\u00adre in Germany\u2014there were incon\u00adceiva\u00adble cri\u00admes against huma\u00adni\u00adty, that coll\u00adec\u00adti\u00adve trans\u00adports to the con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon camps also star\u00adted from here, that peo\u00adp\u00adle who had lived in our city and who were neigh\u00adbors had to die becau\u00adse of their faith and their origin.<\/p>\n

It was the spe\u00adcial con\u00adcern of our late city coun\u00adcil chair\u00adwo\u00adman Ange\u00adli\u00adka Thiels that with the memo\u00adri\u00adal at the site of the for\u00admer syn\u00adago\u00adgue, which was des\u00adtroy\u00aded by the Natio\u00adnal Socia\u00adlists on Novem\u00adber 10, 1938, a very per\u00adso\u00adnal and \u201ctan\u00adgi\u00adble\u201d form of remem\u00adbrance should be found. Each of the more than 1,500 names inscri\u00adbed here and the dates asso\u00adcia\u00adted with them stand for a per\u00adson who was sin\u00adgled out, who was bran\u00added, and who fell vic\u00adtim to the incon\u00adceiva\u00adble cri\u00admes of the Nazis.<\/p>\n

It was important to Ange\u00adli\u00adka Thiels to crea\u00adte a space that gives rela\u00adti\u00adves the oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty to mourn, that gives the dead a face, that pre\u00advents the memo\u00adry from dis\u00adap\u00adpearing, that enables discussions.<\/p>\n

\u201cHuman digni\u00adty is inviolable\u201d. This les\u00adson from the Natio\u00adnal Socia\u00adlist cri\u00admes was enshri\u00adned by the fathers of the Basic Law in the first artic\u00adle of our con\u00adsti\u00adtu\u00adti\u00adon. The memo\u00adri\u00adal in the Coulin\u00adstra\u00ad\u00dfe is an ever\u00adlas\u00adting and cle\u00adar\u00adly visi\u00adble remin\u00adder not to for\u00adget this mandate.<\/p>\n
