The archi\u00advist Ger\u00adhard Klai\u00adber was ent\u00adrus\u00adted with this task. Thus, in recent years, the rese\u00adarch work, which in its ori\u00adg\u00adins goes back to the post-war peri\u00adod and had been dri\u00adven for\u00adward by insti\u00adtu\u00adti\u00adons, indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adals and asso\u00adcia\u00adti\u00adons, could more or less be brought to a con\u00adclu\u00adsi\u00adon. In the cour\u00adse of this work, the results of the eva\u00adlua\u00adti\u00adon of various groups of sources and preli\u00admi\u00adna\u00adry work were brought tog\u00ade\u00adther for the first time in an Access data\u00adba\u00adse in the muni\u00adci\u00adpal archi\u00adves and sup\u00adple\u00admen\u00adted by the archi\u00adves\u2019 own rese\u00adarch, espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly in archi\u00adval records that had pre\u00advious\u00adly been blo\u00adcked for use. The deter\u00admi\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon of the data in ques\u00adti\u00adon was made dif\u00adfi\u00adcult abo\u00adve all by the fact that the most important source for such per\u00ad\u00adson-rela\u00ad\u00adted rese\u00adarch, name\u00adly the Wies\u00adba\u00adden resi\u00addents\u2019 regis\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon card index, had been des\u00adtroy\u00aded when a bomb hit poli\u00adce head\u00adquar\u00adters in&nbsp;1945.<\/p>\n<p>The main source for the pro\u00adject was the \u201cMemo\u00adri\u00adal Book. Vic\u00adtims of the Per\u00adse\u00adcu\u00adti\u00adon of the Jews under Natio\u00adnal Socia\u00adlist Tyran\u00adny 1933 \u2014 1945\u201d. In 1960, on the initia\u00adti\u00adve of the Jeru\u00adsa\u00adlem memo\u00adri\u00adal Yad Vas\u00adhem, the Fede\u00adral Archi\u00adves had been com\u00admis\u00adsio\u00adned by the Fede\u00adral Minis\u00adter of the Inte\u00adri\u00ador to com\u00adpi\u00adle sources on the histo\u00adry of the Jewish popu\u00adla\u00adti\u00adon in Ger\u00adma\u00adny tog\u00ade\u00adther with the Arol\u00ad\u00adsen-based Inter\u00adna\u00adtio\u00adnal Tra\u00adcing Ser\u00advice (ITS), which were to be used for the pre\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon of a memo\u00adri\u00adal&nbsp;book.<\/p>\n<p>At that time, access to exten\u00adsi\u00adve records from the con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon camps and places of detenti\u00adon of the Natio\u00adnal Socia\u00adlist regime\u2014which were kept at the ITS\u2014was still pos\u00adsi\u00adble,. Later on, the\u00adse hol\u00addings were blo\u00adcked for any kind of sci\u00aden\u00adti\u00adfic use and were only made acces\u00adsi\u00adble again about two years ago. It was not pos\u00adsi\u00adble to include the archi\u00adves of the GDR, which refu\u00adsed to coope\u00adra\u00adte. With the take\u00adover of the hol\u00addings of the Cen\u00adtral Sta\u00adte Archi\u00adves of the GDR after 1990, a lar\u00adge num\u00adber of pre\u00advious\u00adly uneva\u00adlua\u00adted docu\u00adments were the\u00adr\u00ade\u00adfo\u00adre trans\u00adfer\u00adred to the Fede\u00adral Archi\u00adves, whe\u00adre pre\u00adpa\u00adra\u00adto\u00adry work for a con\u00adsider\u00ada\u00adb\u00adly expan\u00added new edi\u00adti\u00adon of the Memo\u00adri\u00adal Book began in&nbsp;1992.<\/p>\n<p>In Wies\u00adba\u00adden its\u00adelf, the regis\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon office and the hol\u00addings of the muni\u00adci\u00adpal archi\u00adves make it pos\u00adsi\u00adble to trace the preoc\u00adcu\u00adpa\u00adti\u00adon with the vic\u00adtims of the Holo\u00adcaust back to the late&nbsp;1940s.<\/p>\n<p>The first inqui\u00adries addres\u00adsed to the Wies\u00adba\u00adden Gar\u00adden and Ceme\u00adtery Ami\u00adnis\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon by the ITS, the French Gra\u00adves Com\u00admis\u00adsi\u00adon, Bel\u00adgi\u00adan, Ita\u00adli\u00adan, Eng\u00adlish, Ame\u00adri\u00adcan and other insti\u00adtu\u00adti\u00adons with the aim of repa\u00adtria\u00adting rela\u00adti\u00adves of the respec\u00adti\u00adve natio\u00adna\u00adli\u00adties buried in Wies\u00adba\u00adden date back to 1948. A list of the deaths of for\u00adeig\u00adners, which was pre\u00adsu\u00adma\u00adb\u00adly alre\u00ada\u00addy com\u00adpi\u00adled by the Gar\u00adden and Ceme\u00adtery Office during the war, also con\u00adta\u00adins the names of 180 Jewish per\u00adsons who had died in Wies\u00adba\u00adden by 1942, inclu\u00adding around 70 peo\u00adp\u00adle who com\u00admit\u00adted sui\u00adci\u00adde due to the harass\u00adment or in view of the impen\u00adding depor\u00adta\u00adti\u00adons. Inci\u00adden\u00adtal\u00adly, the cor\u00adre\u00adspon\u00adding file did not reach the muni\u00adci\u00adpal archi\u00adves until work on the data\u00adba\u00adse had long sin\u00adce&nbsp;begun.<\/p>\n<p>A new and quite dif\u00adfe\u00adrent impul\u00adse for deal\u00ading with the vic\u00adtims\u2019 data came from the then SPD mem\u00adber of the Bun\u00addes\u00adtag and for\u00admer Lord Mayor Rudi Schmitt (SPD). After a visit to the Yad Vas\u00adhem memo\u00adri\u00adal in Jeru\u00adsa\u00adlem, he approa\u00adched his suc\u00adces\u00adsor as Lord Mayor, Bernd Oschatz (CDU), in April 1982 and sug\u00adgested that the names of Wiesbaden\u2019s Holo\u00adcaust vic\u00adtims be com\u00adpi\u00adled in an artis\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly desi\u00adgned volu\u00adme and given to Yad Vas\u00adhem. The muni\u00adci\u00adpal archi\u00adves were com\u00admis\u00adsio\u00adned to find out the per\u00adsons in ques\u00adti\u00adon and their life data, and to this end they cont\u00adac\u00adted the Fede\u00adral Archi\u00adves, which in June sent a list of \u201ctho\u00adse Jews\u201d \u201cfor whom the available sources indi\u00adca\u00adted Wies\u00adba\u00adden, Bie\u00adbrich or Erben\u00adheim as their place of birth or resi\u00addence\u201d. On the other hand, the Fede\u00adral Archi\u00adves were unable to pro\u00advi\u00adde any infor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon on the other sub\u00adurbs that had been incor\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adted into Wies\u00adba\u00adden at the time, nor on Jewish per\u00adsons who had only resi\u00added in Wies\u00adba\u00adden for a short time. The direc\u00adto\u00adry com\u00adpri\u00adsed almost 1,100 names and was han\u00added over to the tea\u00adcher and local his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adan Lothar Bem\u00adbe\u00adnek, who was working on the topic of \u201cNatio\u00adnal Socia\u00adlism in Wies\u00adba\u00adden\u201d as part of the pro\u00adject \u201cHes\u00adse under Natio\u00adnal Socia\u00adlism\u201d at the Hes\u00adsi\u00adan Insti\u00adtu\u00adte for Edu\u00adca\u00adtio\u00adnal Plan\u00adning and School Deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adment. Bem\u00adbe\u00adnek was able, through his research\u2014including in Polish archives\u2014to sup\u00adple\u00adment this, so that in the end 1147 peo\u00adp\u00adle were known. At the same time, he poin\u00adted out exis\u00adting gaps: For exam\u00adp\u00adle, the Wies\u00adba\u00adden Jews with Polish citi\u00adzen\u00adship were miss\u00ading from the list. On the other hand, the sub\u00adurbs, except for Am\u00f6\u00adne\u00adburg, Mainz-Kas\u00ad\u00adtel and Mainz-Kos\u00adt\u00adheim, see\u00admed to him to have been com\u00adple\u00adte\u00adly recorded.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"w-separator size_custom\" style=\"height:35px\"><\/div><div class=\"wpb_text_column\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2>Han\u00addo\u00adver in Isra\u00adel: by the Lord Mayor and the Head of the City Council<\/h2>\n<p>In the fol\u00adlo\u00adwing months, the memo\u00adri\u00adal book entit\u00adled \u201cThe Jewish Vic\u00adtims of Natio\u00adnal Socia\u00adlism 1933 \u2014 1945 \u2014 Wies\u00adba\u00adden\u201d was pro\u00addu\u00adced in tri\u00adpli\u00adca\u00adte by the cal\u00adli\u00adgrapher and desi\u00adgner Wer\u00adner Schnei\u00adder, who taught com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adca\u00adti\u00adon design as a pro\u00adfes\u00adsor at the Wies\u00adba\u00adden Uni\u00adver\u00adsi\u00adty of Appli\u00aded Sci\u00aden\u00adces. On Octo\u00adber 21, 1983, the city of Wies\u00adba\u00adden pla\u00adced an adver\u00adti\u00adse\u00adment in \u201cAuf\u00adbau,\u201d \u201cAmerica\u2019s lea\u00adding Ger\u00ad\u00adman-lan\u00ad\u00adguage news\u00adpa\u00adper,\u201d announ\u00adcing that the city, fol\u00adlo\u00adwing the exam\u00adp\u00adle of other Ger\u00adman cities, would pre\u00adsent the Yad Vas\u00adhem memo\u00adri\u00adal site with a volu\u00adme con\u00adtai\u00adning 1147 names com\u00adpi\u00adled from a direc\u00adto\u00adry in the Fede\u00adral Archi\u00adves. In Sep\u00adtem\u00adber 1984, this work was han\u00added over to Yad Vas\u00adhem by Mayor Dr. Hans-Joa\u00ad\u00adchim Jentsch and City Coun\u00adcil Chair\u00adman Kurt Lon\u00adquich. During a visit to Yad Vas\u00adhem the fol\u00adlo\u00adwing year, Dr. Jacob Gut\u00admark of the Jewish Com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty had a copy of the book made. In 1988, Lothar Bem\u00adbe\u00adnek was able to hand over a con\u00adsider\u00ada\u00adb\u00adly expan\u00added list of names to the Jewish Community.<\/p>\n<p>The work in the city archi\u00adve, which began at the end of 2001, initi\u00adal\u00adly con\u00adcen\u00adtra\u00adted on the names and data of Wies\u00adba\u00adden Jews recor\u00added in the first edi\u00adti\u00adon of the memo\u00adri\u00adal book of the Fede\u00adral Archi\u00adves. In 2002, the Jewish com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty made available to the City Archi\u00adves the so-cal\u00ad\u00adled Gesta\u00adpo card index, which had had to be kept by the com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty from 1938 onwards. The City Archi\u00adves recei\u00adved per\u00admis\u00adsi\u00adon to copy this card index. This source con\u00adta\u00adins valuable infor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon about the fami\u00adly affi\u00adlia\u00adti\u00adon of indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal per\u00adsons, dates of mar\u00adria\u00adges, refe\u00adren\u00adces to chan\u00adges of resi\u00addence and emi\u00adgra\u00adti\u00adon. Most important\u00adly, it also con\u00adta\u00adins the depor\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon data. From the \u201cGesta\u00adpo card index\u201d 130 names were alre\u00ada\u00addy known who had fled to Wes\u00adtern count\u00adries in 1938 and 1939. The\u00adse per\u00adsons were also not yet included in the memo\u00adri\u00adal book of the Fede\u00adral Archi\u00adves. In the sum\u00admer of 2002, the rese\u00adar\u00adcher began to check the fate of the\u00adse per\u00adsons on the basis of a card index of around 60,000 names, which at that time was still held by the Regio\u00adnal Coun\u00adcil in its func\u00adtion as com\u00adpen\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adon aut\u00adho\u00adri\u00adty for the for\u00admer admi\u00adnis\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adve dis\u00adtrict of Wies\u00adba\u00adden. Accor\u00adding to the file num\u00adbers noted in the card index, about 500 com\u00adpen\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adon files were then suc\u00adces\u00adsi\u00adve\u00adly eva\u00adlua\u00adted. This work was tem\u00adpo\u00adr\u00ada\u00adri\u00adly inter\u00adrupt\u00aded by the fact that the hol\u00addings were han\u00added over to the Hes\u00adsi\u00adan Main Sta\u00adte Archi\u00adves in Wies\u00adba\u00adden and were not imme\u00addia\u00adte\u00adly available for use here. In Octo\u00adber 2002, the data\u00adba\u00adse of the muni\u00adci\u00adpal archi\u00adve con\u00adtai\u00adned 1225 names of Jewish vic\u00adtims of the Nazi tyranny.<\/p>\n<p>In 2004, after coor\u00addi\u00adna\u00adti\u00adon dis\u00adcus\u00adsions with the poli\u00adti\u00adcal com\u00admit\u00adtees, the repre\u00adsen\u00adta\u00adti\u00adves of the Jewish Com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty and the Acti\u00adve Muse\u00adum Spie\u00adgel\u00adgas\u00adse (AMS), the Com\u00admit\u00adtee for Schools and Cul\u00adtu\u00adre deci\u00added on a chan\u00adge of plan: Now not only nati\u00adve Wies\u00adba\u00adden resi\u00addents and tho\u00adse who had been depor\u00adted from here were to be included in the data\u00adba\u00adse of vic\u00adtims, but also, if pos\u00adsi\u00adble, tho\u00adse who had only stay\u00aded in Wies\u00adba\u00adden tem\u00adpo\u00adr\u00ada\u00adri\u00adly and were sent to their deaths from other places.<\/p>\n<p>A clo\u00adse coope\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon with a working group of the AMS having alre\u00ada\u00addy been agreed upon sin\u00adce 2001, from 2007 three sci\u00aden\u00adti\u00adfic assistants were com\u00admis\u00adsio\u00adned with fur\u00adther rese\u00adarch in a joint\u00adly con\u00adduc\u00adted pro\u00adject. Their task was to exami\u00adne fur\u00adther com\u00adpen\u00adsa\u00adti\u00adon files as well as the so-cal\u00ad\u00adled for\u00adeign exch\u00adan\u00adge files in the main sta\u00adte archi\u00adve. A total of around 1100 indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal case files were exami\u00adned, which enab\u00adled the fate of 50 addi\u00adtio\u00adnal per\u00adsons to be cla\u00adri\u00adfied. In the next step, the ent\u00adries in the expan\u00added new edi\u00adti\u00adon of the memo\u00adri\u00adal book of the Fede\u00adral Archi\u00adves, which had sin\u00adce been published, were com\u00adpared with the data\u00adba\u00adse of the City Archi\u00adves. In this way, about 150 names could be added. In the cour\u00adse of this work, it was deter\u00admi\u00adned that the civil regis\u00adters would have to be con\u00adsul\u00adted to cla\u00adri\u00adfy con\u00adtra\u00addic\u00adto\u00adry infor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon in the sources and files. Fur\u00adther\u00admo\u00adre, until 2007, the docu\u00adments coll\u00adec\u00adted in the Acti\u00adve Muse\u00adum Spie\u00adgel\u00adgas\u00adse were eva\u00adlua\u00adted, inclu\u00adding, for exam\u00adp\u00adle, let\u00adters of Jews form\u00ader\u00adly living in Wiesbaden.<\/p>\n<p>In the mean\u00adti\u00adme, the pro\u00adto\u00adcol depart\u00adment of the city admi\u00adnis\u00adtra\u00adti\u00adon had also pro\u00advi\u00added the archi\u00adve with seve\u00adral fol\u00adders con\u00adtai\u00adning docu\u00adments on the visi\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon pro\u00adgrams for for\u00admer Jewish Wies\u00adba\u00adden resi\u00addents that had been con\u00adduc\u00adted sin\u00adce the 1980s, which also included some reports on per\u00adse\u00adcu\u00adti\u00adon and depor\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon.
