The\u00adre on the Michels\u00adberg, whe\u00adre the Memo\u00adri\u00adal to the Mur\u00adde\u00adred Jews of Wies\u00adba\u00adden is loca\u00adted today, the new syn\u00adago\u00adgue had stood sin\u00adce 1869: a magni\u00adfi\u00adcent buil\u00adding by the archi\u00adtect Phil\u00adipp Hoff\u00admann in Byzan\u00adti\u00adne style. In the Reichs\u00adpo\u00adgrom\u00adnacht of Novem\u00adber 9, 1938, it fell vic\u00adtim to arson and com\u00adple\u00adte des\u00adtruc\u00adtion. After the end of the 2nd World War not\u00adhing was left of it. Only a ste\u00adle from 1953 recal\u00adled its old loca\u00adti\u00adon. Alre\u00ada\u00addy in the 1950s, the Coulin\u00adstra\u00ad\u00dfe led through the midd\u00adle of the old ground plan of the des\u00adtroy\u00aded synagogue.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

At the begin\u00adning of the 1970s, the syn\u00adago\u00adgue see\u00admed to have been for\u00adgot\u00adten when the city of Wies\u00adba\u00adden \u2014 fol\u00adlo\u00adwing the zeit\u00adgeist of the car-fri\u00aden\u00add\u00ad\u00adly city \u2014 had an ele\u00adva\u00adted bridge built for auto\u00admo\u00adbi\u00adle traf\u00adfic from the neigh\u00adbor\u00ading Schwal\u00adba\u00adcher Stras\u00adse to the Coulin\u00adstras\u00adse, which ran across the for\u00admer syn\u00adago\u00adgue pro\u00adper\u00adty. It was only 30 years later, when atti\u00adtu\u00addes to urban plan\u00adning had chan\u00adged and, as a result, the ele\u00adva\u00adted bridge was demo\u00adlished, that the way was cle\u00adared to deal with the rede\u00adsign of the syn\u00adago\u00adgue squa\u00adre on the Michelsberg.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Com\u00adme\u00admo\u00adra\u00adting the Jewish vic\u00adtims of the Holo\u00adcaust from Wies\u00adba\u00adden by name at the site of the for\u00admer syn\u00adago\u00adgue had long been a spe\u00adcial con\u00adcern of the Acti\u00adve Muse\u00adum of Ger\u00ad\u00adman-Jewish Histo\u00adry asso\u00adcia\u00adti\u00adon. In 2003, the asso\u00adcia\u00adti\u00adon had begun to pre\u00adsent \u201cmemo\u00adri\u00adal sheets\u201d with the bio\u00adgra\u00adphies of mur\u00adde\u00adred Jewish citi\u00adzens in a dis\u00adplay case at the Michelsberg.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>

The various initia\u00adti\u00adves to estab\u00adlish a memo\u00adri\u00adal on the Michels\u00adberg \u2014 pro\u00admo\u00adted espe\u00adci\u00adal\u00adly by then city coun\u00adcil pre\u00adsi\u00addent Ange\u00adli\u00adka Thiels (1941 \u2014 2009) \u2014 final\u00adly cul\u00admi\u00adna\u00adted in June 2005 in a reso\u00adlu\u00adti\u00adon of the Wies\u00adba\u00adden city coun\u00adcil to invi\u00adte ten\u00adders for a com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adon of urban plan\u00adning ide\u00adas \u201cfor the com\u00adme\u00admo\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon by name of the Wies\u00adba\u00adden Jews mur\u00adde\u00adred by the Nazi regime\u201d for the area of the for\u00admer syn\u00adago\u00adgue. The task of the invi\u00adted archi\u00adtec\u00adtu\u00adral firms was to sub\u00admit pro\u00adpo\u00adsals for a rede\u00adsign of the area around the for\u00admer syn\u00adago\u00adgue. The traf\u00adfic func\u00adtion of the busy Coulin\u00adstras\u00adse, which today cuts through the for\u00admer site of the old syn\u00adago\u00adgue, was to be main\u00adtai\u00adned. The land\u00adscape archi\u00adtect Bar\u00adba\u00adra Wille\u00adcke from Ber\u00adlin and her firm \u201cpla\u00adnung frei\u00adraum\u201d emer\u00adged as the win\u00adner of this archi\u00adtec\u00adtu\u00adral com\u00adpe\u00adti\u00adti\u00adon. Her design for the con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion of the memo\u00adri\u00adal, which was com\u00adple\u00adted in 2011, was to be realized.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The\u00adre were still a num\u00adber of plan\u00adning issues to be resol\u00adved, such as in par\u00adti\u00adcu\u00adlar the struc\u00adtu\u00adral ancho\u00adring of the seven-meter-high rein\u00adforced con\u00adcre\u00adte walls on the slo\u00adpe facing the Schul\u00adberg and the use of a resistant natu\u00adral stone mate\u00adri\u00adal in the area of the Coulin\u00adstras\u00adse road\u00adway. Con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion work was final\u00adly able to begin in April 2010. The cere\u00admo\u00adni\u00adal lay\u00ading of the foun\u00adda\u00adti\u00adon stone took place on May 21, 2010. On Janu\u00adary 27, 2011, the natio\u00adnal day of remem\u00adbrance for the vic\u00adtims of the Nazi regime, the com\u00adple\u00adted memo\u00adri\u00adal was cere\u00admo\u00adnious\u00adly han\u00added over to the Wies\u00adba\u00adden public.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

With memo\u00adri\u00adal area and name rib\u00adbon: The buil\u00adding in its details<\/h2>\n

The name rib\u00adbon naming the Jewish vic\u00adtims of the Holo\u00adcaust from Wies\u00adba\u00adden repres\u00adents the cen\u00adtral com\u00adpo\u00adnent of the memo\u00adri\u00adal. Other main ele\u00adments are the wall panels that show the over\u00adall space of the memo\u00adri\u00adal in the city and the mar\u00adking of the ground plan and base of the des\u00adtroy\u00aded syn\u00adago\u00adgue. The wes\u00adtern wall sec\u00adtion is divi\u00added by a glass pane about 80 cen\u00adti\u00adme\u00adters wide, engra\u00adved with the recon\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adted inte\u00adri\u00ador of the syn\u00adago\u00adgue, a work by Wies\u00adba\u00adden artist Nabo Ga\u00df based on a design by Hein\u00adrich Lessing.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

On the insi\u00adde of the wall panels, at eye level, a rib\u00adbon about 1.20 meters high is embedded, bea\u00adring the names of the 1507 Jewish vic\u00adtims known until 2011, arran\u00adged in alpha\u00adbe\u00adti\u00adcal order by fami\u00adly name. The name of each vic\u00adtim is men\u00adtio\u00adned on its own natu\u00adral stone slab with first name, fami\u00adly name, mai\u00adden name in the case of mar\u00adried women, year of birth and death, and place of death.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The let\u00adters are made with a reli\u00adef of about five mil\u00adli\u00adme\u00adters, so that they can be \u201cgras\u00adped\u201d hap\u00adti\u00adcal\u00adly. The five-cen\u00ad\u00ad\u00adti\u00ad\u00adme\u00ad\u00adter-high and 50 to 120-cen\u00ad\u00ad\u00adti\u00ad\u00adme\u00ad\u00adter-long natu\u00adral stone slabs made of Viet\u00adna\u00adme\u00adse basalt are simi\u00adlar in color and mate\u00adri\u00adal to tho\u00adse of the wall panels, but dif\u00adfer in their finer sur\u00adface tex\u00adtu\u00adre. Blank stones are added to enable the inte\u00adgra\u00adti\u00adon of addi\u00adtio\u00adnal names that may be rese\u00adar\u00adched later. The rib\u00adbon is reces\u00adsed into the wall. \u201cStones of remem\u00adbrance\u201d can be pla\u00adced on the edge of the recess thus crea\u00adted. As dark\u00adness falls, the name band is illuminated.<\/p>\n

On the outer lines of the synagogue\u2019s base, seven-meter-high wall panels mark the \u201cemp\u00adty space\u201d and the loca\u00adti\u00adon of the des\u00adtroy\u00aded syn\u00adago\u00adgue over a total length of 62 meters. The nar\u00adrow, mason\u00adry natu\u00adral stone bands are made of Arme\u00adni\u00adan basalt lava.<\/p>\n

The enti\u00adre area of the memo\u00adri\u00adal site is laid out in gray slabs of Chi\u00adne\u00adse basalt. In order to per\u00adcei\u00adve the place as a who\u00adle unit, the mate\u00adri\u00adal of the pave\u00adment is color-matched to the wall panels. On the flo\u00ador of the memo\u00adri\u00adal space as well as on the road\u00adway, the foot\u00adprint of the syn\u00adago\u00adgue is repro\u00addu\u00adced. For this pur\u00adpo\u00adse, a stone sur\u00adface con\u00adtras\u00adting with the sur\u00adroun\u00adding pave\u00adment is used. The upper edge of the base of the for\u00admer syn\u00adago\u00adgue is repro\u00addu\u00adced on the wall panels by a pro\u00adtru\u00adding lay\u00ader of natu\u00adral stone. This mar\u00adking gives an impres\u00adsi\u00adon of the size of the for\u00admer syn\u00adago\u00adgue and at the same time rhyth\u00admi\u00adzes the wall surfaces.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The new urban space: coun\u00adter\u00adpoint to the lack of history<\/h2>\n

The open inte\u00adri\u00ador space of the memo\u00adri\u00adal is func\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adly divi\u00added into the acces\u00adsi\u00adble memo\u00adri\u00adal space in the incis\u00aded slo\u00adpe and the adja\u00adcent area with the road\u00adway of the Coulin\u00adst\u00ada\u00ad\u00dfe crossing the complex.<\/p>\n

The squa\u00adre on the Michels\u00adberg forms the coun\u00adter\u00adpart to the memo\u00adri\u00adal site and blends into the adja\u00adcent pede\u00adstri\u00adan zone. Here, an infor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon board with an inte\u00adgra\u00adted touch\u00adscreen moni\u00adtor pro\u00advi\u00addes infor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon about the memo\u00adri\u00adal and the for\u00admer syn\u00adago\u00adgue. Visi\u00adtors can also access the \u201cmemo\u00adri\u00adal sheets\u201d of the Acti\u00adve Muse\u00adum of Ger\u00ad\u00adman-Jewish Histo\u00adry the\u00adre, which pro\u00advi\u00adde infor\u00adma\u00adti\u00adon about the fate of indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal Jewish vic\u00adtims of Wiesbaden.<\/p>\n

Even if the syn\u00adago\u00adgue on the Michels\u00adberg was not rebuilt, the city of Wies\u00adba\u00adden, by rea\u00adli\u00adzing the con\u00adcept of the memo\u00adri\u00adal, has set a coun\u00adter\u00adpoint to the face\u00adl\u00adess\u00adness of histo\u00adry in which the high bridge, demo\u00adlished years ago, used to cut through this part of the city.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
