The memo\u00adri\u00adal we desi\u00adgned does not cla\u00adim to inter\u00adpret histo\u00adry in a cer\u00adtain way. It invi\u00adtes us to seek a per\u00adso\u00adnal inter\u00adpre\u00adta\u00adti\u00adon as well as to find a con\u00adtem\u00adpo\u00adra\u00adry form for coll\u00adec\u00adti\u00adve remem\u00adbrance. The design approach is to crea\u00adte a place in the city that pro\u00advi\u00addes an oppor\u00adtu\u00adni\u00adty for pre\u00adsent as well as future gene\u00adra\u00adti\u00adons to face the pro\u00adcess of coming to terms with the Holocaust.

Remem\u00adbrance in the urban landscape<\/h4>\n

A city\u00adscape is always the pre\u00adcise reflec\u00adtion of its histo\u00adry, the image of social decis\u00adi\u00adons and his\u00adto\u00adri\u00adcal deve\u00adlo\u00adp\u00adments. The citi\u00adzens of the sta\u00adte capi\u00adtal Wies\u00adba\u00adden have deci\u00added to set a clear sign in their city land\u00adscape that bears wit\u00adness to the Holo\u00adcaust and the mur\u00adder of the peo\u00adp\u00adle of Wiesbaden\u2013and thus of the Euro\u00adpean Jews\u2012and that depicts the histo\u00adry of the place and the Nazi ter\u00adror in their city. In memo\u00adry of the mur\u00adde\u00adred Jews, the names of 1,507 mur\u00adde\u00adred Jewish citi\u00adzens known so far are pre\u00adser\u00adved at the site of the syn\u00adago\u00adgue on the Michels\u00adberg, which was des\u00adtroy\u00aded during the Reichs\u00adpo\u00adgrom\u00adnacht. Tho\u00adse who do not even have a gra\u00adve are thus given a place whe\u00adre their name is cle\u00adar\u00adly visi\u00adble and per\u00adma\u00adnent. The high wall panels of the memo\u00adri\u00adal bea\u00adring the name rib\u00adbon bear wit\u00adness to the gap\u2013the loss of the syn\u00adago\u00adgue. The memo\u00adri\u00adal space thus crea\u00adted gives the vic\u00adtims and the des\u00adtroy\u00aded syn\u00adago\u00adgue a place in the urban space as well as in Wiesbaden\u2019s ever\u00ady\u00adday life. Remem\u00adbe\u00adring stands here for taking into the future and for the remin\u00adder that some\u00adthing like this must never hap\u00adpen again.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Approa\u00adches and overlaps<\/h4>\n

The memo\u00adri\u00adal stands in the field of ten\u00adsi\u00adon bet\u00adween memo\u00adri\u00adal space and urban space, bet\u00adween visi\u00adtors and the names of the vic\u00adtims, bet\u00adween the indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal and socie\u00adty. It intert\u00adwi\u00adnes insi\u00adde and out\u00adside, com\u00adme\u00admo\u00adra\u00adti\u00adon and ever\u00ady\u00adday life. One can enter, lin\u00adger or pass by. One can come to remem\u00adber. Rela\u00adti\u00adves can com\u00adme\u00admo\u00adra\u00adte their dead. An indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal name stone is dedi\u00adca\u00adted to each vic\u00adtim. Emp\u00adty name stones refer to the gaps in the lists of vic\u00adtims and stand for tho\u00adse who\u00adse fate is still unknown today.<\/p>\n

The rai\u00adsed let\u00adters of the name stones reach into the vibrant urban space, can lite\u00adral\u00adly be gras\u00adped, and in their pla\u00ads\u00adtic pre\u00adsence address the pre\u00adsent, the living. Their rai\u00adsed form allows for a tac\u00adti\u00adle approach, thus making it pos\u00adsi\u00adble to estab\u00adlish a con\u00adnec\u00adtion, a cont\u00adact with the vic\u00adtims. The visi\u00adtor should enter the memo\u00adri\u00adal free of fami\u00adli\u00adar asso\u00adcia\u00adti\u00adons. It gives space to form one\u2019s own impres\u00adsi\u00adon, to deve\u00adlop an indi\u00advi\u00addu\u00adal, not pre\u00adde\u00adter\u00admi\u00adned, commemoration.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

The syn\u00adago\u00adgue and the place today<\/h4>\n

The syn\u00adago\u00adgue ori\u00adgi\u00adnal\u00adly stood at the ent\u00adrance to the Old Town. Today, the Coulin\u00adstras\u00adse runs through its for\u00admer site. Until the con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion of the memo\u00adri\u00adal, memo\u00adri\u00adal plaques and a memo\u00adri\u00adal stone on the landing of the stairs, as well as a mar\u00adker with blue paint on the asphalt, testi\u00adfied to the histo\u00adry of the site. After the des\u00adtruc\u00adtion of the syn\u00adago\u00adgue and the con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion and demo\u00adli\u00adti\u00adon of the High Bridge, all remains of the Jewish place of wor\u00adship were final\u00adly lost. No struc\u00adtu\u00adral remains were found even during excava\u00adtions as part of the con\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion work for the memo\u00adri\u00adal. The only evi\u00addence of the syn\u00adago\u00adgue are old plans and pic\u00adtures and the vir\u00adtu\u00adal recon\u00ads\u00adtruc\u00adtion of the buil\u00adding deve\u00adlo\u00adped from them, as well as the exten\u00adsi\u00adve rese\u00adarch and com\u00adme\u00admo\u00adra\u00adti\u00adve work car\u00adri\u00aded out in recent years and decades.<\/p>\n

The pre\u00advious forms of remem\u00adbrance were taken up and con\u00adtin\u00adued. They were not repla\u00adced, but given a place and frame\u00adwork in the memo\u00adri\u00adal. The results of the rese\u00adarch can also be view\u00aded in the form of the com\u00adme\u00admo\u00adra\u00adti\u00adve sheets on a screen on the out\u00adside of the memo\u00adri\u00adal area. The syn\u00adago\u00adgue flo\u00ador plan beco\u00admes visi\u00adble at the authen\u00adtic loca\u00adti\u00adon. The Michels\u00adberg city ent\u00adrance beco\u00admes a squa\u00adre. Coulin\u00adstras\u00adse, which runs across it today, reflects the pre\u00adsent. The site of the syn\u00adago\u00adgue was car\u00adved out of the hills\u00adi\u00adde and made visi\u00adble. The pre\u00adsent and the past are now reflec\u00adted in each other.<\/p>\n

From all this, a new place has grown in the urban land\u00adscape, a frame\u00adwork against for\u00adget\u00adting, for memo\u00adries and com\u00admon remem\u00adbrance. In accordance with its dedi\u00adca\u00adto\u00adry pur\u00adpo\u00adse, this space is inten\u00added to con\u00adtri\u00adbu\u00adte to con\u00adtin\u00adued civic, poli\u00adti\u00adcal and social enga\u00adge\u00adment in the memo\u00adry of the city and its people.<\/p>\n

The memo\u00adri\u00adal is ancho\u00adred in the urban land\u00adscape as a wit\u00adness to histo\u00adry: as a per\u00adma\u00adnent remin\u00adder and as a man\u00adda\u00adte for future posi\u00adti\u00adve social developments.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>
